Federal BOP Release Paths
The Federal Bureau of Prisons holds people serving federal sentences. It is separate from Campbell County Jail, the Tennessee Department of Correction, and U.S. Marshals Service pretrial custody. A person can have ties to Campbell County yet serve a federal sentence in another state. The BOP Inmate Locator searches nationally, so no county filter is needed.
A BOP release can be a return to the community, placement under federal supervised release, or delivery to another authority under a detainer. Supervised release is a federal court term served in the community after prison. It differs from TDOC parole and does not appear in the Campbell jail release record unless a later local custody event occurs. A “Released” result therefore answers a narrow question: BOP custody ended.
| Record | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| BOP Inmate Locator | Whether BOP lists a federal person, the release date, and current or former location. |
| BP-A714 | How and where the institution planned the release, including community or detainer destination. |
| Federal docket | What the court ordered and whether supervised release was imposed. |
| Receiving agency record | Whether another custodian took the person after BOP. |
Confirm a Federal BOP Release
Open the BOP Inmate Locator. Search by BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number when one is known. A biographical search accepts first and last name with optional middle name, race, age, and sex. Numeric identifiers reduce the risk of selecting the wrong person.
- Choose an identifier search when possible. Copy the number from a court or authorized correction record instead of guessing.
- If searching by name, enter the full federal name and use optional filters only when they are known.
- Compare the result’s name, register number, current age, race, and sex before reading the custody fields.
- Record the release date and location exactly. Note the date and time the locator was checked.
- Use the federal docket or BOP record request when the destination, supervision, or detainer issue matters.
The BOP locator explanation says records generally cover federal people released after 1982 and update daily. When the release date is in the past and no current facility appears, BOP says release occurred on that date. The locator does not establish the person’s present address or rule out custody with another authority.
Federal Release Records Contact
The public locator is the fastest BOP status check, but it does not display every institutional release field. Form BP-A714, Notice of Release and Arrival, distinguishes a community release from a detainer release. It can contain the release method, destination, transportation, supervision jurisdiction, proposed residence, and reporting information. Access to a person-specific federal record can require authorization or another legal basis because protected information is not made public merely by asking.
Use BOP Freedom of Information Act procedures when a public locator result is not enough. Identify the person with a full name and register number and describe the existing record sought, such as BP-A714 or a release record for a defined date. Follow current authorization and identity rules for nonpublic material. State a fee limit or ask for an estimate rather than assuming that every record is free.

For court orders and supervised-release terms, search the federal docket or contact the clerk for the court that handled the case. An order can explain the legal sentence and supervision. The executing institution or custodian confirms the physical event. Do not convert an expected release date in a judgment into an exact release time.
BOP Custody Outside Campbell
The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates a nationwide facility network, not one building in Campbell County. Federal classification, bed space, program needs, and other correctional decisions can place a sentenced person far from Tennessee. Transfers between BOP institutions do not amount to release, even when the former facility no longer lists the person.
Records from the Campbell County Sheriff should be used only for a local custody event. TDOC FOIL covers Tennessee felony custody and supervision. Neither system replaces BOP for a federal sentence. Conversely, a BOP no-result does not prove a local release. The person may have been held only in USMS custody, may fall outside public locator coverage, or may belong in a state or county system.
- BOP custody
- Federal imprisonment after commitment to the Bureau of Prisons.
- Supervised release
- A federal court-ordered community term that usually follows imprisonment.
- USMS custody
- Federal court and pretrial custody that may use contracted local beds.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another authority to take custody after BOP.
Campbell Federal Release Boundaries
Federal court custody does not always become BOP custody. The U.S. Marshals Service handles federal pretrial and court-related detention and can place a person in a contracted local facility. A judge may order release from that arrangement without the person ever receiving a public BOP history. Research found no nationwide USMS former-prisoner locator comparable to the BOP service and no Campbell-specific USMS holding contract.
For a USMS-only case, use the federal docket to identify the order, then confirm execution with the custodian or the responsible Marshals Service district. A court order explains the legal authority but does not prove the exact time the holding facility completed release. If the person was later committed to BOP, switch to the national BOP locator and use the register number. The two federal paths should not be merged merely because they arise from the same case.
Before assigning a Campbell-linked case to the federal system, check Campbell Online Court Records and the official Campbell court page for a local proceeding. Those county sources do not contain the federal docket, but they can show that the event instead belonged to General Sessions, Criminal, or Circuit Court. Once federal custody is established, return to the BOP or USMS route.
A missing BOP result can also reflect spelling, an unmatched identity, coverage limits, or a case that remained with another custodian. It cannot establish a Campbell County jail release, a Tennessee state discharge, or a present federal status. Record the system searched, the identifier, the exact result, and the time checked. When sources disagree, request the existing record from the agency that controlled the relevant custody event.
Federal Detainer Release Handoffs
A BOP release date can mark a handoff instead of a return to the community. BP-A714 expressly separates those paths. If it names a state, county, immigration, or other receiving authority, continue with that authority’s locator or source record. The federal past release date remains correct for BOP, while the person can remain physically confined elsewhere.
ICE describes an immigration detainer as a request for advance notice and temporary continued custody so ICE can assume custody. No Campbell County ICE agreement or federal holding contract was established in the research. The distinction is conditional, not a statement that a specific Campbell case involved immigration custody. Follow the actual destination field rather than inferring one from nationality or a missing result.
Important: A federal “Released” location does not mean all custody ended. Check BP-A714, the docket, and any named receiving agency.
Federal Release Dates and Credits
A future BOP release date is projected. BOP calculations can include applied credits and sentence information available at that time, but the public date is not a promise. Court changes, credit application, disciplinary decisions, detainers, or other lawful calculation events can alter the expected date. The Campbell projected release date page explains why eligibility, projection, authorization, and actual release must be kept separate.
After the date passes, return to the locator. If the location changes to Released or no current institution is shown with a past date, record the exact result. BOP data update daily, so note the check time and preserve the register number used to identify the person. When official proof is required for a lawful court or records purpose, seek the executed BOP record rather than relying on a saved prediction. A past BOP date remains limited to federal prison custody and does not resolve any later supervised-release term, Tennessee arrest, county booking, or detainer handoff.
